Maimonides’ Mishneh Torah

09/22/2011

The Bodleian Libraries (University of Oxford) have digitized their copy of Maimonides’ Mishneh Torah.  You can read their press release about it, or go directly to the manuscript.  (There is an introductory page with information about it, and you click on the big “Read the manuscript” button in the upper right corner to get to the manuscript itself.)

I know – I don’t read 12th century Hebrew, either.  (I wish I did!) But this is worth a peek, even if you have no idea what is on the page.  It’s amazing to be able to see a book that is more than 800 years old, especially since books this old are generally not available to the public because they are so fragile and precious.

It’s quite an amazing accomplishment, and the story of how the text was made available is interesting, too. Visit the site and experience some good, old-fashioned wonderment.

The Catholic Study Bible and the New American Bible

09/08/2011

Librarians here are getting a lot of requests for the Catholic Study Bible.  As much as we’d like to have a copy for every student on campus, we can’t spend our entire book budget on buying multiple copies of the same book.

We do have the 1990 edition in our reference collection, which means it can only be used in the building.  We also have a circulating copy of the 1990 edition, and also a circulating copy of the 2006 edition.

Unfortunately, this book is not available in electronic format from any of the library ebook vendors.  In fact, it’s not available in electronic format anywhere, not even for personal use on Kindles or Nooks.

The Catholic Study Bible is based on the New American Bible.  The 2002 edition of the New American Bible is available online from the Vatican.  Students can copy and paste the text into a word document and format it to their liking.  This version lacks the footnotes and commentary that are available in the Catholic Study Bible, but the underlying text should be nearly identical.  Luckily, the online version does have a concordance and a glossary, and it is searchable.

We hope that helps!
